Lower School

Lower School

The Lower School offers a prep school education for children between the ages of 7-9.  The curriculum provides our pupils with the skills and experiences that will form the foundation for their future learning, and begin the process of helping each child to achieve his or her full potential.   We recognise the importance of each child being happy and successful in school.  To this end, we place great emphasis on the pastoral care, ensuring that each child is secure and confident both in and out of the classroom.  We recognise too that each child is an individual, with their own unique talents and personality.  We get to know each one as an individual, nurturing their strengths and helping to develop other areas to allow them to reach their full potential.

We believe that a school is built on people. We are fortunate to have a very dedicated team of form teachers, who provide the main focus for each child. In addition Lower School pupils are taught by specialist staff in French, Design & Technology, Drama, Art, Music and PE.  There are also two Learning Enhancement Assistants who provide valuable support in classrooms, organising and supervising practical activities or giving individual support to children who are experiencing difficulties.

The Lower School is housed in the ground floor of the Tom Davies building.  During the last few years there has been an extensive programme of refurbishment to ensure that all classrooms are equipped for modern teaching, including interactive whiteboards and digital visualisers.   The Lower School also has access to the ICT suites, a well-stocked library, the theatre, the music school, Art and Design & Technology classrooms and the extensive sports facilities.

A Day in the Life of Lower School

There are ten 35 minute lessons in each day.  Morning break takes place on the hard courts and surrounding grass area, which is dedicated to Lower School children.  Lunch is eaten in the dining room and is supervised by Lower School teachers.  Lessons end at 4.00pm, when we can dereg and go home; alternatively, we can have M & B (milk and biscuits) and then join in the junior activities programme until 5.00pm.  We can dereg then, or stay for Junior Tea and Prep.  This is taken by a Lower School teacher in the dining room, and then in one of the classrooms for supervised prep.  This means that when we finish at 6.00pm, we can go home having completed our prep.

Foremarke Plus

Foremarke Plus is an optional Saturday morning activity-based programme which runs from 8.00am until 12.30pm each term-time Saturday. This enables children in the Lower School to develop their skills and experience in areas such as sports, art and computing.
